What Colleges Should Learn From Newspapers' Decline

Newspapers are dying. Are universities next? The parallels between them are closer than they appear. Both industries are in the business of creating and communicating information. Paradoxically, both are threatened by the way technology has made that easier than ever before.

This article if from April 3rd, 2009. It may not be a "Current Event" but I found it very interesting for those of you heading to college very soon.

That is really interesting. I never thought about it like that. I wonderif there is an increase in online education and if it matches up with the newspaper decline.

I am not really surprised about the possibility of colleges vanishing. Students like me are already doing our high school studies on-line. Many people I know are doing their college courses on-line also. Being able for people to do their college classes on-line allows them much more flexibility to work and saves them money.

Taking on-line classes are definatly the new "fad" but I do nat think it will ever rule out universities all together. people still want that "college experience" and they cant get that when they are sitting at home on a computer. It is also very distracting and can get boring just sitting at you computer getting work done. People may even push it off to the last minute. I can only hope that if college does end up only on computers that they 1. find more jobs for all the people who will be out of work (college staff) and 2. hope that people take it just as seriously as going to college and find another way to gain that social part of their lives.

I think everyone should try out the "college experience." Not only are you getting an education, your meeting new people, and learning to live on your own. Your living in an enviornment that isnt as sheltered, and you learn new things about other people and even yourself. There are many aspects about college that prepare teens for the real world. College isnt for everyone, but for a lot of people it is. I really hope Universities remain and online classes dont over take them.

I have always been told that correlation does not mean causation. Just because one event seems like it is caused by something does not mean that it is. I think universities do not have anything to worry about. Now a better question is are college campuses going to switch to more of an online interface and is the trend of actually going to classes in person going to decline?
